The immersion experience is an opportunity for Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) students to meet faculty and peers in person on the UC Berkeley campus. Students gain on-the-ground perspectives from faculty and industry leaders, meet with data science professionals, and soak up more of the School of Information (I School) culture. Offered twice a year, each three- to four-day immersion is crafted to deliver additional learning, networking, and community-building opportunities to MIDS students.
“I was most looking forward to seeing how companies like Netflix used analytics to drive value and enhance their business proposition. My biggest takeaway was that analytics is very powerful but can be challenging to implement! By far, spending time with my classmates was the most memorable experience. After taking over a year of classes with many of them, seeing them in person was a wonderful experience. We went out, explored Berkeley, and had a great time!”

Activities & Events
The immersion experience is designed to further enhance MIDS students’ data science expertise and expose them to the industry culture. To deliver this experience in just a few days, the MIDS immersion includes a full itinerary of informative and social events with MIDS classmates from all over the world.
Immersion experiences typically include:
A welcome dinner with UC Berkeley faculty, Dean AnnaLee “Anno” Saxenian, Cal Bears mascot Oski and campus singing groups
Tailgates and catered socials on the I School’s South Hall lawn
Career advancement workshops covering topics such as leadership, corporate case studies, and how to perfect your elevator pitch
Presentations from career services
Sporting events (students have attended San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s games, and have watched the Cal Bears play at Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium)
Networking dinners and lunches with industry leaders and peers
Company visits to data-driven organizations in the Bay Area
A town hall with Dean Saxenian and faculty panels
Each MIDS immersion coincides with one of the I School’s two annual conferences: the DataEDGE conference, held in the spring, and Data Dialogs which takes place in the fall. Each conference explores the increasing demand for data tools, concepts, and highly-skilled professionals in today’s leading businesses and organizations. Students engage with topics presented by guest speakers from companies at the forefront of the data revolution through hands-on workshops and discussions.
Past immersions have welcomed industry professionals from:
This action-packed experience engages MIDS students with the I School community, providing them the opportunity to foster lifelong relationships with fellow I School students, faculty and data science leaders from top Bay Area companies.
